This article details how to use Gmail with PGP Desktop.

Resolution


To use your Gmail account with PGP Desktop, you must first enable POP for your Gmail account within your Gmail account mail settings. See the following link for more information on enabling POP for your Gmail account.

To use a Gmail account with PGP Desktop, you must edit the port and SSL settings of your Gmail account in your email client and the PGP Messaging service in PGP Desktop. This article includes the steps to enable Gmail and PGP Desktop with the following email clients:

  • Outlook 2003
  • Outlook 2007
  • Outlook Express
Outlook 2003

Outlook Settings

  1. Open Outlook and click Tools.
  2. In the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts.
  3. Click Next with the View or change existing e-mail accounts radio button selected.
  4. Select your Gmail account from the list and click the Change button. The email settings are displayed.
  5. Click the More Settings... button and select the Advanced tab.
  6. Change the Incoming server (POP3) to use port 110.
  7. Change the Outgoing (SMTP) to use port 25.
  8. If enabled, remove the checkmarks next to This server requires an encrypted connection(SSL).
  9. Select the Outgoing tab and place a check next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  10. Click OK to update your settings.
  11. Click Next and then click Finish.
PGP Desktop Settings

  1. Open PGP Desktop.
  2. Select the PGP Messaging Control box.
  3. Click your Gmail account messaging service. The Account Properties are displayed.
  4. Click the Server Settings... button.
  5. For the Incoming Mail Server, click the down arrow to change the Protocol to POP.
  6. Confirm the SSL/TLS field is set to Automatic and change if necessary.
  7. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) settings, click the radio button to manually specify a port.
  8. Type 587 for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) port.
  9. Confirm the SSL/TLS field is set to Automatic and change if necessary.
  10. Click OK to update the settings.
Outlook 2007

Outlook Settings

  1. Open Outlook and click Tools.
  2. In the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Select your Gmail account from the list and click the Change. The email settings are displayed.
  4. Click the More Settings... button and select the Advanced tab.
  5. Change the Incoming server (POP3) to use port 110.
  6. Change the Outgoing (SMTP) to use port 25.
  7. If enabled, remove the checkmarks next to This server requires an encrypted connection(SSL).
  8. Select the Outgoing tab and place a check next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
  9. Click OK to update your settings.
  10. Click Next and then click Finish.

  1. Open PGP Desktop.

Outlook Express Settings

  1. Open Outlook Express and click Tools.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Click the Mail tab and double-click your Gmail account.
  4. Select the Advanced tab.
  5. Change the Incoming server (POP3) to use port 110.
  6. Change the Outgoing (SMTP) to use port 25.
  7. If enabled, remove the checkmarks next to This server requires an encrypted connection(SSL).
  8. Click the Servers tab, place a checkmark next to My server requires authentication under Outgoing Mail Server.
  9. Click OK to update your settings.
PGP Desktop Settings

  1. Open PGP Desktop.
  2. Select the PGP Messaging Control box.
  3. Click your Gmail account messaging service. The Account Properties are displayed.
  4. Click the Server Settings... button.
  5. For the Incoming Mail Server, click the down arrow to change the Protocol to POP.
  6. Confirm the SSL/TLS field is set to Automatic and change if necessary.
