Issue/Introduction

When trying to mount a PGP Virtual Disk created as a Dynamic disk, the PGP Virtual Disk will not mount with versions prior to PGP Desktop 9.5.

The following error will occur:

PGP Disk Mount failed because: "this PGP Disk was created by a newer version of PGP Disk."

Cause

Versions of PGP Desktop prior to PGP Desktop 9.5 did not have the functionality to create a Dynamic (resizable) disk. Therefore, The size of the disk can be dynamically expanded or compacted as data is added to or removed from the disk. A PGP Virtual Disk was created as a dynamic disk

Resolution

When creating a PGP Virtual Disk, you may specify the disk to be Dynamic (resizable) or Fixed. Specifying the size is accomplished from the Capacity menu in the PGP Virtual Disks settings.

  • Dynamic (resizable) - This type of disk grows in capacity as files are added to it, yet it stays small until the additional space is needed. PGP Desktop manages this process, you only need to set the maximum size that you would like the disk to be. You can also compress this disk later, if you choose.

  • Fixed size - This type of disk remains the same size, regardless of how many files are added to it.

Resolution

PGP Virtual Disks created as Dynamic instead of Fixed can only be mounted using PGP Desktop 9.5 and above.

If a PGP Virtual Disk must be mounted by a version prior to PGP Desktop 9.5, when creating the PGP Virtual Disk, make sure to select the Fixed size option.
