NTFS is not available as a filesystem format when creating a PGP Virtual Disk

Issue/Introduction

When you attempt to create a PGP Virtual Disk, the menu for choosing a filesystem format does not contain the NTFS option. 

 

Cause

There are at least three known reasons that NTFS is not available as a filesystem format option for PGP Virtual Disks:
 

• The drive or partition in which the PGP Virtual Disk file will be created is not formatted NTFS
• The specified size for the PGP Virtual Disk is less than 5 MB
• You are not logged into the computer as a local administrator

PGP Virtual Disk File Although a PGP Virtual Disk can be accessed as a drive or folder within Windows, it is actually a file (with a .pgd extension) in the file system. As a result, PGP Virtual Disks must conform to the standards set forth by the file system(s) in which they reside. Additionally, PGP Virtual Disks are subject to the same limitations and problems as other individual files in any given file system: size restriction, corruption, deletion, etc.   PGP Virtual Disk Size Requirements Following are the minimum size requirements for PGP Virtual Disks: FAT - 100 KB or greater NTFS - 5 MB or greater FAT32 - 260 MB or greater

 

Resolution(s)

1. Make sure the drive or partition in which the PGP Virtual Disk will be created is formatted NTFS:
2. Make sure the size of the PGP Virtual Disk is equal to, or greater than, 5 MB:
3. Make sure you are logged into the computer as a local administrator. If you are logging in via Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, or any other remote login method, you will not be able to create an NTFS-formatted PGP Virtual Disk.
