Issue/Introduction

  • Some managed clients do not get  updates, even though they are connected to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).
  • Group Update Provider (GUP) is configured, and few clients are updating

N/A

Cause

The unreserved disk space is kept to the limits as content updates are downloaded. Once the limit is reached, the Group Update Provider continues to serve the clients, but only for the existing content.

Maximum number of simultaneous downloads to clients

  • This option controls how many threads are allocated to handle incoming requests.
  • Memory utilization is associated with the threads, so more threads requires more memory.
  • Processing the incoming requests requires CPU cycles, so more threads requires more CPU cycles.

  • You should tune the value to the limitations of the Group Update Provider computer.
  • The goal is to download content updates to clients as quickly as possible, without overwhelming the Group Update Provider computer.
  • Set the value high enough to get reasonable concurrency, but low enough to avoid overtaxing the Group Update Provider computer.

Resolution

Configure the Group update provider settings, for' Maximum disk cache size allowed for downloading updates' , and for 'Maximum number of simultaneous downloads to clients' to appropriate values so that clients would get the updates from GUP, and GUP would have enough space to be able to store updates for even the old content request from clients.

To configure these options:

  1. Log into the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
  2. Click on the Policies tab
  3. Click LiveUpdate under View Policies
  4. Click on the LiveUpdate Settings policy that is assigned
  5. Click on Server Settings
  6. Be sure Use a Group Update Provider is checked and click the Group Update Provider button

  7. Under Group Update Provider Settings, change the values for Maximum number of simultaneous downloads to clients and Maximum disk cache size allowed for downloading updates (MB) to the desired settings specific for the Group Update Provider computer

Applies To

Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager is installed on a Windows 2003 Server, and the Group Update Provider setting is configured in the LiveUpdate settings policy for the  clients.

There are clients from the same group and subnet that are updating, however a few are not.
