Issue/Introduction

An attachment is being sent from an Exchange system and is arriving through the Symantec Messaging Gateway with an attachment named Winmail.dat.

Cause

The format of the message sent by the sender's email client (usually Outlook) sent the message using Microsoft rich text format (RTF) or Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF). Symantec recommends that HTML or plain text formatting is used by Outlook for sending email.

Resolution

This is not an error and Messaging Gateway has made no change to the message. Messaging Gateway cannot convert RTF or TNEF formatted messages to internet standard HTML.
