Attachment is getting converted to winmail.dat

Messaging Gateway

An attachment is being sent from an Exchange system and is arriving through the Symantec Messaging Gateway with an attachment called Winmail.dat.

The format of the message sent by the sender's email client (usually Outlook) attempted to send the message in rich text format (RTF) or Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF). Symantec recommends that HTML or plain text formatting is used by Outlook for sending email.

This issue can be remediated by Microsoft support. See Email received from a sender using Outlook includes a Winmail.dat attachment and How e-mail message formats affect Internet e-mail messages in Outlook for more information.

Additional Information

It may be possible that sender has send single email with attachment to multiple recipients. Few of these recipients can get original attachment and others can get winmail.dat.
