Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange is installed on your Exchange 2007 or 2010 Mailbox Role Server.
When installing the license or when attempting to enable Symantec Premium AntiSpam, you receive an error and are unable to implement Symantec Premium AntiSpam on that server.
Symptoms
An error occurs while attempting to register Symantec Premium AntiSpam (PAS).
If you attempt manually registering PAS, you will see the error: "Unable to save registration data to your disk. Please check available disk space
or permissions, and try again."
Spam detection is not available on an Exchange Mailbox-only Role server. See "About Spam Detection", in chapter 7 of the Implementation Guide for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/Server 2010. It states that "Spam detection is only available on Mail Security when it is installed on Edge Transport or Hub Transport server roles."
Implement Symantec Premium AntiSpam on your Exchange Hub, or Edge server, but not on the Mailbox Server
With SMSMSE 6.5.5 and later, the error message now contains the follow text:"Verify that your Exchange server is running Edge or Hub role. Premium AntiSpam is available only on Exchange servers that run the Edge or Hub role."
Technical Information
Premium AntiSpam uses a Transport agent to scan for spam. Transport agents can only be installed on Exchange 2007 or 2010 systems with the Hub Transport or Edge Transport roles installed. For more information about Transport agents and their role in Exchange 2007, see this document: 'Overview of Transport Agents'. For more information about Transport agents and their role in Exchange 2010, see this document: 'Understanding Transport Agents'
