Purge Maintenance failing with a timeout

Issue/Introduction

The following errors appear in the logs right before the purging maintenance finishes.

Description: Unable to execute the specified purge event 'Delete Resource Events'. Exception: Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding..

Description: Failed to purge resource history data. (Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is Closed.

   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream)

   at Altiris.NS.StandardItems.Purge.PurgeItem.OnSchedule(String identifier))

Cause

The evt tables are very large and the purge is timing out when trying to complete the process.

Resolution

Change the settings so that you are purging a smaller amount of data until the Purge is able to complete then slowly change the settings back running the purge each time until it completes normally.
