Issue/Introduction

You would like the Group Update Provider (GUP) to retrieve updates from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) at a scheduled time.  Can GUPs be updated with a time schedule from LiveUpdate policy?

Resolution

GUPs cannot be scheduled to retrieve updates at a specific time.

It is important to understand that a SEP client's roles as a GUP (update proxy) and a client are separate. Although you can schedule when a SEP client runs LiveUpdate or configure the heartbeat, that same scheduling does not apply to the GUP functionality, nor does the heartbeat interval.

The GUP will request updates from the SEPM on demand, when a client is requesting an update that the GUP does not currently have. Primarily these should be only smaller delta updates- not full packages, as this feature is designed to preserve bandwidth. There may be cases where the GUP does request a full update: when a client is so far out of date there is no delta that can cover it. However, once the GUP has that file, it will store it for as long as it is configured to do so.
