Issue/Introduction

When sent from Microsoft Exchange, why is the "display name" portion of a messages From: address truncated when masqueraded by the Symantec Brightmail Gateway?

Symptoms
When the Symantec Brightmail Gateway masquerade feature is used, a From: address sent by Microsoft Exchange is changed similar to the following:

From: Sample User

becomes:

From: "User"

Other MTAs will generally set the display name in quotes, which is properly handled by Symantec Brightmail Gateway, as follows:

From: "Sample User"

becomes, as expected:

From: "Sample User"

Cause

The display name is not being properly quoted by Microsoft Exchange according to RFC standards. RFC 5322, the RFC that dictates how the headers of a message should look, states that the display name should be a single word part or otherwise quoted. Because the display name is not quoted, the Symantec Brightmail Gateway is only taking the first word part nearest the address definition.

Resolution

This issue has been resolved in Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) version 9.5.  Customers experiencing this issue should upgrade to the latest SMG release.
