Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction


In the Windows Application event log, an error message indicates that Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange was unable to send an attachment to the "Quarantine Server." An example:

 

  • Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) is configured to use a Quarantine Server.
    To verify whether SMSMSE is configured to use a Central Quarantine Server:
    1. Login to the SMSMSE console
    2. Click on Monitors->Quarantine Settings
    3. The Quarantine Server checkbox is enabled and the connection settings have been filled in, for example:

 

Cause

There is a communication issue between the Exchange server upon which SMSMSE is installed and the Quarantine Server.

Resolution

Resolve any networking issues between the SMSMSE server and the Quarantine Server.
To troubleshoot the connection to the Quarantine server follow these steps

    1. Open a command prompt on the SMSMSE server.
    2. At the prompt enter the following command:
      ping <Quarantine_Server_IP_Address>
      Where <Quarantine_Server_IP_Address> is the server Address in the Quarantine Settings from the SMSMSE console.
    3. If the ping command shows and error the Quarantine server is not routable from the SMSMSE server. Contact the Quarantine Server Admin to verify the server is accessible.
    4. If the ping succeeds, prompt enter the following command:
      telnet <Quarantine_Server_IP_Address> <port>
      Where <Quarantine_Server_IP_Address> is the server Address in the Quarantine Settings from the SMSMSE console and the <port> is the Server port value.
    5. If the telnet command returns and error, contact the Quarantine Server Admin to verify the server is running and that the Quarantine Services are started.
