Issue/Introduction

There are so many items in the quarantine folder of an unmanaged client that the client interface hangs when you click on the "View Quarantine" button. How do you delete these files manually so they do not overwhelm the client user interface?

Symptoms
When you click on the "View Quarantine" button of an unmanaged client, you get an hourglass and the system locks up or you get a message stating the application is not responding.

Cause

There is such a large number of items in the quarantine folder that the user interface will get hung trying to load them.

Resolution

Manually delete the items in the quarantine folder of this machine.

  • Navigate to one of the following locations:
    - Windows 2003/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine (or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\Quarantine)
    - Windows Vista: C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\Quarantine
    - Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\Quarantine
  • Highlight all items located in the Quarantine folder.
  • Delete these items from within the folder. Leave the folder itself.

Test by opening the client user interface and click on the "View Quarantine" button. The application should respond immediately and there should be no items listed in this list now.
