Issue/Introduction

Google Chrome fails to launch when Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 is installed with Application and Device Control.

Symptoms
When Google Chrome is installed on Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 unmanaged clients, it shows error "Application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click OK to terminate the application" while starting.

The Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 control log shows that chrome.exe is blocked.

Cause

This is caused by a conflict with Application and Device Control.

Resolution

This problem is fixed in Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 Maintenance Release 3 (MR3) and later. For information on obtaining the latest build of Symantec Endpoint Protection, read How to obtain an update or an upgrade for your Symantec corporate product.

If you are unable to upgrade to MR3 or later, do one of the following to work around the problem.

Unmanaged clients
For unmanaged clients, either disable Sysplant or remove Application and Device Control.

To disable Sysplant

  1. Back up the Windows registry on the affected system.
For instructions, see How to back up the Windows registry.
  2. Click Start > Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SysPlant.
  4. In the right pane, right-click Start, and then click Modify
  5. Change the value to 4 to disable the driver.
  6. Restart the computer to commit the changes.
  7. Uninstall and then reinstall Google Chrome.

To remove Application and Device Control

  1. Uninstall Google Chrome.
  2. In the Control Panel, in Add or Remove Programs, select Symantec Endpoint Protection, and click Change.
  3. Click Next, select Modify, and click Next.
  4. Under Proactive Threat Protection, set Application and Device Control to This feature will not be available.
  5. Click Next and continue through the rest of the wizard.
  6. Reinstall Google Chrome.
  7. Restart the computer.

Managed clients
For managed clients, use Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to modify the feature set for the client package to remove Application and Device Control.

To remove Application and Device Control

  1. On the Clients tab, select the appropriate Group.
  2. On the Install Packages tab, select the applicable package.
  3. Under Tasks in the left pane, select Edit Client Install Package Properties.
  4. In the Edit Client Install Package window under Client Features, uncheck Maintain existing client features while updating.
  5. In the drop-down menu under Select the features you want to use, choose any of the packages below the All features of Symantec Endpoint Protection selection.
Do not select All features of Symantec Endpoint Protection as this contains the Application and Device Control addition.
  6. Adjust the Upgrade Schedule as needed.
  7. Click OK.
