Issue/Introduction

You notice that the Symantec Management Client service terminates repeatedly, smc.exe application fault and CPU usage increases dramatically.

Symptoms
Event ID 7031 / Error / "The Symantec Management Client service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this # time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 1000 milliseconds: Restart the service."
  • Smc.exe spikes to 100% CPU usage.
  • Error: "Faulting application Smc.exe, version 11.0.2000.1231, faulting module tse.dll, version 11.0.2.1231, fault address 0x0001ff1d"


Cause

There is a conflict between older Nortel VPN Client software, its associated adapter and the Symantec Endpoint Protection client's 802.1x module. Please be aware that some third parties have rebranded the Nortel client for use in their software.

Symantec customers have reported the issue with the following versions:

Nortel VPN client V04_65.26 (date: 2002)
Nortel VPN client V04_65.18 (date: 2002)

Resolution

(Suggested for troubleshooting purposes only) Disable the Nortel IPSECSHM Adapter.
  • Remove the older Nortel VPN client software.
  • Update to the latest version of the Nortel VPN Client.
  • Upgrade the Symantec Endpoint Protection client to Maintenance Release 3. This conflict is resolved in Symantec Endpoint Protection Maintenance Release 3.
