Endpoint Protection

When you install the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client, the installation fails with MSI error 1500, indicating that another installation is in progress.

Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.

The MSI installer checks to ensure that only one program can install on the computer at a time. This error means that one of two conditions exist:

  • A different program installation is running
  • A previous installation attempt may have failed without completely finishing, which leaves the computer in a state that indicates incorrectly that an installation is currently running.

To troubleshoot this issue, try each of the following solutions until the problem is resolved:

Prevent Java auto-updater from starting

  1. Click Start, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. On the Startup tab, uncheck Java auto-updater (jusched.exe), and click OK.
  3. Restart the computer, and install SEP.

End Msiexec.exe processes

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and click Start Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, click any instances of msiexec.exe, and click End Task.
  3. Restart the computer, and install SEP.

Delete the InProgress registry key

  1. Click Start, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. In the Windows Registry Editor, delete the following key: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\InProgress
  3. Restart the computer, and install SEP.

Stop processes with open MsiExecute handles

  1. Obtain a third-party tool such as such as Windows Sysinternals Handle that allows you to view open handles for any process. Search for _MsiExecute, and use the tool to stop the process.
  2. Restart the computer, and install SEP.

Clean boot

Perform a clean boot of Windows (Microsoft Knowledge Base link) and install SEP.

System Restore

Use System Restore to return the computer to a previous state, and install SEP.

Re-image the computer from a known good state, and install SEP.
