Issue/Introduction

What is the difference between NAS Message Suppression and NAS Storm Protection?  The following tabs in the nas probe GUI look like they perform much of the same functionality but actually do not work in conjunction with one another.

  • Message Suppression tab

  • Setup tab for Storm Protection

Environment

Release: Any UIM GA
Component: UIMNAS

Resolution

The two tabs in NAS for (Storm Protection and Message Suppression) are not related. Please see the following for more information:

1. Message Suppression tab

Message Suppression works by looking at the message text, subsystem id and severity of each alert. If each of these criteria are exactly the same for each alert, then it will generate a Supp.Key in the alert of the Alarm Console. This Supp.Key also needs to match for each alert.

2. Storm Protection tab

This will detect a large influx of alarms coming from a probe, robot, or Suppression-id and stop them at a specific threshold. The Suppression-id function of Storm Protection uses the dev_id of each alert as a basis for detecting a large influx of alarms.
