CA Test Data Manager (Data Finder / Grid Tools)

Issue/Introduction

I am trying to configure VTDM. I have downloaded the compressed file, extracted the two files.

  • Virtual Service Catalog
  • Virtual Service Catalog UI.

Reviewing the vTDM Installation guide the first step is to install the vTDM appliance by importing the OVA file. The documentation says to Open the vSphere client and click File, Deploy OVF Template.

Which file is the vsphere client? I would like some clarification on the following questions:

  1. Should VMware be hosted on our CA TDM server?
  2. If so, My VMware admin needs to install VMware ESXi 5.1 or later, and once that is installed I need to connect to VMWare vCenter Server (does this belong to Broadcom)?
  3. Once the above is set up, how will I still get the OVF template ?
  4. How am I supposed to get vTDM specific properties (Root password, API access password, etc)?

Environment

Release :

Component : CA Test Data Manager - Virtual Test Data Manager Appliance

Resolution

Q) Should VMware be hosted on our CA TDM server?

A) No,  The TDM server does not host VMware. They are two separate products, so don't confuse the two.

Q) My VMware admin needs to install VMware ESXi 5.1 or later, and once that is installed I need to connect to VMWare vCenter Server (does this belong to Broadcom)?

A) As a requirement for deploying the vTDM appliance, we require the VMware server, that will be hosting the VMware virtual machines, to be running VMware ESXi 5.1 or later. CA/Broadcom does not own your VMware deployment. This is an internal environment that belongs to you, or the customer that you are deploying the vTDM on.

Q) Once the above is set up, how will I still get the OVF template?

A) The vTDM appliance runs a Virtual Machine (VM). You need give the OVA file to your VMware Admin and have them deploy the OVF template to your VM host that will be running the vTDM appliance. Once the VM host is configured and registered, the testers can access the vTDM appliance (VM Host) from Portal.

The following information must be filled out (answered by your VMware admin) to deploy the OVF template:

  • Source - defines where to locate the OVA file
  • Name - defines the name of the Virtual Machine that will host the vTDM appliance
  • Inventory Location - defines the VM's location in the Data Center
  • Host/Cluster - defines where you want to run the VM
  • Resource Pool - defines where within the hierarchy of the host/cluster to deploy the VM
  • Storage - defines where to store the VM files
  • Disk Format - Specifies options how to store the virtual disks
  • Network Mapping - Maps the network that is used in the VM to one of your Destination Networks

To configure the vTDM appliance these specific Properties need to be filled out:

  • Root Password - defines the password for the root account of the appliance. Administrators use this account to log into the appliance. The default password is C45c4de$1. You can change this password if you wish.
  • API Access Password - defines the password for the vtdadmin account. Administrators use this account to access the appliance through the API. The default password is vtdmadmin. You can change this password is you wish.
  • Share Access Password - defines the password for the vtd account. Testers and TDEs use this account to access the vTDM filesystem. The default password is vtdm, You can change this password if you wish.
  • IP Address - defines the static IP address for the vTDM appliance
  • Netmask - defines the network mask for the assigned IP address
  • Route - defines the default route (gateway) address
  • Hostname - defines the hostname for the vTDM appliance
  • DNS Domain - defines your DNS domain
  • DNS Servers - defines a comma-separated list of IP addresses of the DNS servers
  • Search DNS Domains - defines a comma-separated list of IP addresses of DNS domains to search

Q) How am I supposed to get vTDM specific properties (Root password, API access password, etc)?

A) You and your organization can control the passwords. If you have a policy against using the default passwords, you are free to change them while setting up the vTDM properties. If you do not want to use the default root password, you can work with your VMware admin to come up with a compliant password. Likewise, if you do not want to use the default API access password, you can set up a different password to use. You may want to consult the TDM admin to come up with a compliant password.

As stated above (and in the vTDM Install guide):

  • Default Root Password: C45c4de$1
  • Default API Access Password: vtdmadmin
  • Default Share Access Password: vtdm

The vTDM media can be downloaded from the Broadcom Support Portal (https://support.broadcom.com)

  1. Select Enterprise Software
  2. Select Product Downloads
  3. In the Search field, type Test Data Manager, and select
  4. Click on the first Product link: 'CA Test Data Manager Data Source Type Seeding MULTI-PLATFORM' Release 4.6.
  5. Download the GEN500000000001782.zip file, which is labeled 'CA Virtual Test Data Manager Add-On 4.6'. This is the last vTDM release available, and it should still be compatible with the current release of TDM Portal.
