Issue/Introduction

When upgrading CA Datacom CICS Services to version 14.0, you might notice some new fields on the DBOC INQ=GENOPTS panel.

What are DBOC GENOPTS Fields PGMNAME and FLOWTRACE?

Environment

Release:
Component: DBC

Resolution

PGMNAME: The parameter can have two values of TASK or RQST; if PGMNAME=RQST selected, then it would require the system to obtain the application program name initiating the request every time a request is made within a task, and if the task generates 1000 requests to MUF, then the system would obtain the program name 1000 times for that task. This could be useful if there were different programs from within the same transaction initiating the 1000 requests but if it is the same program initiating all the requests then it is best to select the option of TASK which would require the system to obtain the program name only once per task. This information gets reported on the DBOC INQ=TRACE screen. This is an optimization option for saving GP CPU.

FLOWTRACE: CA Datacom CICS Services has been enhanced to provide an option to turn off the tracing of the logic flow to save on CPU. The default is FLOWTRA=YES, but the customer may select FLOWTRA=NO in the DBCVTPR module assembly. Setting FLOWTRA=NO may save a small amount of CPU for request processing, depending on the workload, but the tradeoff is reduced data collection for diagnostic purposes.

So with these two, setting PGMNAME=TASK and FLOWTRA=NO provides the best CPU utilization, but as noted above, diagnostic research might be a little more difficult. In either case, a DBOC GENOPTS command can change these while the region is up and operating, if needed.
