Issue/Introduction

When configuring multiple Identity Manager (IDMGR) clusters on the same network (e.g., Test, DEV, TRANS, PROD), you may observe cross-cluster interference. This occurs when server logs or processes (such as HornetQ) show references to nodes from different environments, even when separate multicast addresses are configured. This interference can result in tasks becoming stuck in an "In Progress" state indefinitely.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.5

Cause

This issue is caused by cross-cluster traffic leakage. Even when unique multicast addresses are specified in standalone.sh, the underlying JBoss/Wildfly messaging subsystem may still detect or communicate with nodes on the same subnet if the multicast domains are not strictly isolated at the network or configuration level.

Resolution

To isolate your JBoss/Wildfly clusters and prevent interference, follow these configuration steps:

  1. Verify Network Isolation: Ensure each environment (Test, DEV, PROD) operates on a dedicated, isolated subnet. Multicast traffic should not be routable between these environments.
  2. Configure Unique JGroups Stacks: In your standalone.xml or domain.xml configuration, define unique cluster names and multicast ports for every node. Ensure that no two environments share the same multicast address or port configuration.
  3. Bind to Specific Interfaces: Configure the JBoss/Wildfly messaging subsystem to bind to specific, non-shared network interfaces rather than listening on 0.0.0.0 or shared multicast ranges.
  4. Isolate Messaging Subsystems: Ensure that HornetQ or the equivalent messaging provider is configured with unique cluster-password and discovery-group settings for each cluster.
  5. Validate Configuration: After applying these changes, restart the JBoss/Wildfly services and monitor the server logs to ensure that nodes only report discovery of peers within their own specific environment.

Note: As cluster configurations are environment-specific, use these steps as a general guide. Review your application server's documentation for version-specific clustering artifacts.
