Can a field be converted from one type to another

Issue/Introduction

Can a field be converted from one type to another?  For example if a field is originally created as a drop down field, can it be converted to a multi-select field?

Resolution

Unfortunately, it is not possible to convert field types due to differences in how those items may be stored in the database.
