Issue/Introduction

The Workload Automation Desktop Client cannot connect to DE server.  The client shows "Unable to open connection to server" error message.

Environment

Windows OS

Cause

The "unable to connect" can be due to several reasons, such as network or local security settings.

Resolution

1.  Check to see if DE server is up and running
2.  Make sure ports are open and accessible
3.  The local Windows firewall may cause connections issues, add exceptions for client connections
4.  The local drive (C or D) may be write protected as per security settings.  Make sure the Client is installed properly and has read and write access.

Note: As a temporary workaround, add the DE (dSeries)  server hostname and IP to hosts file.  In Windows it is located in %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
E.g. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Additional Information

Make sure Desktop Client is compatible with DE Server version.
