Is there a limit to how many custom fields can be added to an artifact?

Resolution

No such limit exists. You can add as many custom fields to any artifact as you need. 
Remember though, that custom fields can not be deleted, but only hidden, if no longer needed, and so you may want to model your requirements well and add only the necessary fields.
