We reused an obsolete tape range in TMC with which we inserted the new logical tape volumes into the new VTS. All good, we have tested nicely and now the new VTS is available to all systems in the sysplex. Hundreds of new tapes have been created and retrieved successfully. I noticed one job ran into this odd IECTMS3 message saying the scratch tape mounted IS NOT SCRTCH (32). The job completed as the next scratch tape mounted satisfied it. But we wonder what caused the error. You see the range we are reusing had only scratch tapes. Any non-scratch tapes (per CA Earl reports) I ran TMSUPDTE to set the expiration date, expired & scratched them using TMSCLEAN with SCRATCHLIST. So I don't understand how come there could be non-scratch tapes left in this range. Then I notice this tape volume that gave us the errors shows an expiration date of LDATE/001 while indicating it's a scratch tape. Do I need to change the LDATE/001 to a real expiring date like today or yesterday? AS you can see from the display below it's about an obsolete tape from years ago. We no longer have these physical 3490 tapes. --------------------------- VOLSER INQUIRY DISPLAY ---- *** SCRATCH TAPE *** COMMAND ===> I DATE: 2018/296 18.296 VOLSER = S16678 ACTVOL= SMSMC= BLANKS DSN = HEXZEROS DSN17= HEXZEROS EXPDT = LDATE/001 ACCT= HEXZEROS FLAG1 = 34 FLAG2 = 50 FLAG3 = 00 BATCHID= 4F = TMSQSTS FLAG4 = 00 FLAG5 = 00 FLAG6 = 00 HOOKID = FE = EDMID = WMC = 00000 WWID = - - CDATE = 1997/199 CJOB = MIATEST4 CTIME = 1455 CPGM = ADRDSSU LDATE = 1997/199 LJOB = MIATEST4 LTIME = 1455 LPGM = ADRDSSU CSTEP = STEP1 CDDNAME= TAPE1 CUNIT = 0E6A LUNIT = 0E6A OUTDATE= ZEROS OUTCODE= SLOT = 0000000 TRERRC = 00000 BTHDATE= 1986/325 VENDOR = HEXZEROS COUNT = 00191 TWERRC = 00000 DATECLN= 1986/325 USECLN = 00000 CLNCNT = 000 TRERRI = 00000 VOLSEQ = 0001 ROBTY = VIBM ROBID = 001 TWERRI = 00000 1STVOL = NEXTVOL= PREVVOL= PRERRC = 00000 NUMDSNB= 00000 1STDSNB= 00000000 LSTDSNB= 00000000 PWERRC = 00000 LABEL = SL DEN = 38KC TRTCH = 36TK PRERRI = 00000 RECFM = U LRECL = 000000 BLKSIZE= 000000 PWERRI = 00000 AUDATE = 2018/291 AUTIME = 1040 BESKEY = 00000 BLKCNT = 0000000000 AUCODE = 00 AUFLAG1= 00 CPUID = RRMX USERID = SSD#TOOL VOLPERC= 000 FILPERC= 000 COMPRES= 000 BYTEPRC= 000 CTLGCNT= 000

The tape is in scratch status, but the EXPDT is LDATE/001 which would indicate that it is not scratch. Use TMSUPDTE to update the EXPDT to a date in the past, then run CTSSYNC with 2 control statements: PRIVATE,xxxxxx SCRATCH,xxxxxx This will update OAM and the library to turn off the REJTMS bit in the TCDB and make sure the tape is in scratch status in both the TCDB and the library manager.
