Issue/Introduction

Which SMS attributes needs to be set to allow a SMS managed data set to be archived to disk (L1) by CA Disk after 3 days non-usage and then be eligible for MERGE from disk to tape (L2) after another 4 days?

Environment

Release: SMDI3900200-12.5-Disk-Backup and Restore-for z/OS
Component:

Resolution

To allow a SMS managed data set to be archived to disk (L1) by CA Disk after 3 days non-usage and then be eligible for MERGE from disk to tape (L2) after another 4 days, you need to set the following SMS migration attributes in its SMS MC:

Primary Days Non-usage . : 3

Level 1 Days Date/Days . : 7

Please note that "Level 1 Days Non-usage" is not added to "Primary Days non-usage.

Instead, "Level 1 Days Date/Days" indicates the number of days that must elapse since the last reference on level 0 (L0) before a data set on L1 can be migrated/archived/merged further to L2.

Additional Information

If you want a SMS managed data set to be archived by CA Disk directly to tape after 7 days non-usage, then you need to set " Level 1 Days Date/Days" to 0 in its SMS MC:

Primary Days Non-usage . : 7

Level 1 Days Date/Days . : 0

and run an ARCHIVE to tape for these.

Note: When "Level 1 Days Date/Days" is set to 0 and ARCHIVE to disk is being performed, data sets with this attribute are bypassed.
