Issue/Introduction

The community names on all of the devices being managed by Spectrum have changed. How can a user globally change the community names for all device models in Spectrum?

How do we change the Community String for multiple models at one time?

How do we update multiple models at the same time from SNMPv2c to SNMPv3 credentials?

Environment

All supported Network Observability DX NetOps Spectrum releases

Cause

Devices were updated to use SNMPv3 from SNMPv2c.

Devices were updated to use SNMPv2c from SNMPv1.

Device credentials were changed and need to be updated in Spectrum.

Resolution

NOTES:

  • This modifies the SNMP Community String the model uses for polling.
  • This modifies the device models Community_Name attribute; attribute ID 0x10024.
  • This can be used to modify the Community String for all, or a specific set of device models in Spectrum.
  • Test the change on a limited subset of models, just one or two, before applying the change to the complete list of models.
  • Ensure an SNMP Profile exists in Spectrum for the new Community String being utilized.
    • Simplest way to create a new SNMPv3 profile?
      1. Select the Universe from the OC UI.
      2. Select the "Model by IP" button arrow on the Topology tab and select "Create by IP..."

      3. Select the SNMPv3 radio button and then the Profiles button.
      4. Create the new SNMPv3 profile needed for the new credentials.

Use these steps to change the Community String for multiple models at once.

  1. Log in to OneClick as an ADMIN user
  2. Select the Locater tab in the Navigation panel
  3. Open the Devices folder and run the All Devices Search.

  4. Select the target models in the Results tab of the Contents panel.

NOTE: This can also be used against a Global Collection or any model list in the WebApp UI where multiple models can be selected at the same time.

  5. With the target models selected in the Results tab of the Contents panel, right mouse click on one of the selected models. Select Utilities -> Attribute Editor from the menu options presented.

  6. Select Attributes -> SNMP Communities -> SNMP Community String and click on the ">" button to move it to the list on the right.
  7. Uncheck the No Change check box for the "SNMP Community String" attribute.

  8. Enter the new community string in the field and then click on the Apply button
    1. If the new community string is an snmp v1 community string, enter the new community string
    2. If the new community string is snmp v2, use format "#v2/<SNMP community string>".
      1. For example, "#v2/private".
      2. See the Model an SNMP v2c Device Using a DX NetOps Spectrum Toolkit documentation topic for additional details.

      3. If the new community string is snmp v3, use the format "#v3/P:authpassword:privpassword/userid".
        1. For example, #v3/P:MD5^AuthPasswd:AES^PrivPasswd/AuthPriv

        2. See the Modeling an SNMPv3 Device Using a DX NetOps Spectrum Toolkit documentation topic for additional details.
    3. Click OK to accept the changes.
