OM VIEW prefers to have CATALOG control set for it's archive tapes. That way, OM View tracks archived report retentions. And, the tape management system will not prematurely scratch the OM View archive tapes before the OM View defined report retentions have been exceeded.
To accomplish CATALOG control with CA 1, set the OM View SARINIT EXPDT parameter to a value of EXPDT=99000.
Once OM View determines that it no longer needs the tape, it will issue a system call to have the file DSN uncatalogued, and the tape(s) associated to the DSN will be scratched during the CA 1 TMSCLEAN process.
NOTE: All users must perform this step; otherwise, CA View archival tapes may be scratched prematurely.
Additional OM View tape management considerations:
Most tape management systems have functions where by any output tapes created by started tasks or batch jobs that have abended or been canceled are kept for only a specified default period. This can pose problems with OM View archive tapes if the started task (pgm=SARSTC) or the archive tape consolidation utility (pgm=SARPAC) is canceled or abends.
To ensure that valid data is not lost, your tape management system probably provides a way to override this default retention period based on specific information such as a data set qualifier, creating program name, job name, etc.
The OM View archive tapes use the same data set name qualifier as your OM View database, unless a different DSN qualifier was specified on the OM View SARINIT STORGRP0-9 initialization parameters.
* For CA 1 Tape Management (CA 1), by default, the ABE parameter determines how many days to keep tapes that are created from a job that abnormally terminates.
* To override the ABE default, CA 1 provides a customizable exit called TMSXITB, that can be modified to prevent OM View tapes from being scratched or overwritten in the event of an abnormal termination.
NOTE: For more information about the installation of this exit, see the chapter "User Exits and Interfaces" in the CA 1 Tape Management Systems Programmer Guide, or contact Technical Support for assistance with CA 1.
* Optionally, rather than installing the TMSXITB exit, you can also use the Retention Dataset (TMSEXPDT RDS) to override the default ABE setting. If you chose to use the RDS method, be sure you specify the ABEND keyword in the DSN control statement. For example:
DSN=your.caview.dataset.-,ABEND=EXPDT=CATALOG
