Issue/Introduction

Last night I upgraded Librarian to V4.4. We have a job that was set up years ago to maintain one of our Librarian master files. It initializes an existing backup master file, backups the real master file, and then uses the backup to create a new version of the master file.

Last night the initialization step issued the message -
*** ERROR *** MASTER FILE CANNOT BE INITIALIZED AS NOT NEW FILE
and ended with a condition code of 8.

The backup worked fine.

The restore step ended with U2048 abend after issuing the message -
*** ERROR *** MASTER FILE CAN NOT BE RESTORED BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN ACCESSED SINCE ITS INITIALIZATION

Environment

Release : z/OS 4.4

Component : CA Librarian

Cause

CA Librarian has safeguards against inadvertantly reformatting (and thereby destroying the content of) existing Librarian master files.

Resolution

The job needs to be modified to -
1)  delete the back up Master file
2)  Allocate it new and INITialize it
3)  perform the Backup
4)  delete the Master file
5)  allocation and INITialize the Master file
6)  perform the Restore
