What is the purpose of applying CA Recommended Service Maintenance? Are there another way to get these txt files?

CA RS is a collection of maintenance. It is not cumulative. You have to put each one one top of each other to get to the latest CA RS level.
The other options are:
1. Using Chorus Software Manager to apply maintenance to your product. CSM is a GUI based product that allows you to apply maintenance to your CA products.
2. to download the maintenance from support.ca.com and apply them manually. This is the only option that allows you to download as a text file.
